Top Five Benefits from Eating Salmon

Salmon is one of the most popular fish for fish lovers, but did you know there are many benefits to eating salmon than just the great taste?

You may or may not have known that salmon is also considered a super-food due to the rich benefits that it has to offer. The fish itself has been considered a great source of getting protein for muscle builders in addition to the valuable vitamin A and B vitamins. Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant and the B vitamins will help you lose weight by burning fats and glucose for energy as a natural process. Who doesn't like burning fat?

One of the biggest reasons why salmon is also considered a super food is due to the fish being high in omega-3 fatty acids. This fatty acid carries a long list of benefits from eating salmon, so we are going to break down some key health benefits from eating salmon to help you out!

Top Five Healthy Benefits from Eating Salmon

1) Better Skin
- The omega-3 fatty acid contributes to the production of strong collagen and elastin fibers in your skin by maintaining moisture in your skin cells. Your skin is less likely to dry out, which would give you a more full youthful looking skin.

2) Richer Hair
- You can enjoy healthier looking hair due to the omega-3’s benefit of providing valuable nutrition to your hair follicles.  Who doesn't want healthier looking hair?

3) Eye Health
- It has been known that muscular degeneration and dryness in your eyes can be prevented by taking advantage of the omega-3 from Salmon. Our eyes are obviously important, so protecting your eyes should be key in your healthy lifestyle.

4) Protecting your Bloodstream
- The omega-3 plays an important role in preventing extensive blood clotting by decreasing the collection and clumping of your platelets within your blood stream. The fatty acid decreases the amount of cholesterol fat circulating within your blood stream.

5) Keeping your Brain Healthy
- Omega-3 in salmon has been known to relax the brain and increase memory function. The additional benefits have also included decreasing depression and preventing age related decline in brain function of the elderly.

Simple Steps to Eat Healthier - Nutritionist Tip

We all need reminders of how to eat healthier, myself included.  This will help eat cleaner which will help reduce our risks for disease and help us to live a more balanced lifestyle.

1. Cut Down On Sugar

Most of us eat too much sugar. On average, Americans consume 475 calories of added sugars every day (that’s 30 teaspoons), which is way higher than what’s recommended by the American Heart Association (6 teaspoons per day for women, 9 for men).

2. Cut Down On Salt

Americans, on average, eat 3,400 milligrams of sodium in a day, about 1,000 mg more than we should. And if we cut that much out of our daily diets, we’d lower our risk of heart disease by up to 9 percent, according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine.  Here at Eatfitter’s we limit our daily intake to 2600 mg of sodium a day.  We pride ourselves for keeping our meals in the AMA‘s recommended daily allotment for sodium.

3. Cut Down On Saturated Fat

Saturated fat—the kind of fat that’s found in whole milk, cheese, butter and meat - raises your “bad” LDL cholesterol, which can damage arteries.  Limit the amount to less than 10% of your daily calories.
